Angry Baker owns his own bakery in Calgary, Alberta. He is easily angered. He has a girlfriend, Melissa, who works at the National Sugar Distributing Company. His regular customers are Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Smith. Melissa's parents live in Toronto. He proposed to Melissa over the Christmas holidays, 2016. opened his bakeshop very early one warm morning. He put his apron and his hairnet on. While doing so, he glanced at the calendar that hung on the wall in his office.
“Oh my!” exclaimed Angry Baker. “I have been so busy this past few weeks. I didn’t realize that it was Mother’s Day.”
Angry Baker thought for a moment about his mother. She lived in Toronto, Ontario. He lived in Calgary, Alberta.
“I will have to phone her later today,” said Angry Baker. “She will be in church right now.”
Angry Baker thought some more about his mother. He remembered all the pies and cakes she used to make for him. He remembered a particular cake that she made. It was a lemon chiffon cake. It was very light and very moist and so delicious.
“I am going to bake one,” said Angry Baker.
Angry Baker was engrossed in making the lemon chiffon cake when his fiancée, Melissa, walked into the back room.
“That looks so good,” said Melissa. “What are you baking?”
“Not now,” snapped Angry Baker, angrily. “Can’t you see that I am busy?”
Melissa left Angry Baker alone. She knew to leave him alone to do whatever he was doing when he became angry.
“Oh dear,” said Angry Baker, putting the cake in the oven. Poor Melissa. I shouldn’t have yelled at her.”
Angry Baker went out into his shop. He found Melissa cleaning off the front counter.
“I am so sorry,” said Angry Baker, apologizing. “I didn’t mean to snap at you. You just caught me at a bad time.”
“It is okay,” said Melissa. “I understand.”
“It is no wonder that I love you so much,” said Angry Baker, giving Melissa a big hug and kiss.
“Who do you love?” someone asked as they entered the bakery.
Angry Baker turned around and he couldn’t believe his eyes. There, in the bake shop, stood his mother.
“Mother! “exclaimed Angry Baker. “What a surprise! I was thinking about you earlier this morning. You will never guess what is in the oven.”
“We will get to that,” said Mother. “I want to know who you love.”
“Mother,” said Angry Baker, turning red. “This is Melissa, my fiancée and the love of my life.”
Mother gave Melissa a big hug.
“You have been taking very good care of my son,” said Mother, seeing how happy he looked.
“I try,” said Melissa. “It is nice to finally meet you.”
“You as well,” said Mother. “Now, lets see what you have in the oven.”
“Your special lemon chiffon cake,” said Angry Baker.
“Oh,” said Mother. “I can’t wait to taste it.”
“It is like I had a feeling you were going to come today,” said Angry Baker.
Mother explained to Melissa about how she used to bake all kinds of pies and cakes when Angry Baker was young. She told her about her special cake, the lemon chiffon cake and how it was his favourite
and hers too.
Angry Baker brought three slices of his lemon chiffon cake once it was done.
“This is better than mine,” said Mother. “It is so moist and so delicious.”
“Happy Mother’s Day,” said Angry Baker, giving his mother a big hug. “This was a nice surprise.”
“No,” said Mother, pointing to the cake on her plate. “This was.”
