“My vegetables are growing nicely,” said Farmer Fred to himself as he checked on the progress of his first ever vegetable garden that he had planted.
Farmer Fred was very pleased with the progress of his garden. This was something new to him. He normally has a huge herd of cattle on his farm. It was different for him to just have a crop of vegetables to look after.
“I am looking forward to a fresh cob of corn, a freshly sliced tomato and a fresh head of cauliflower,” said Farmer Fred. “It will be different having my own fresh veggies.”
Once Farmer Fred had pulled all the weeds out of the garden and watered all of the vegetables, Farmer Fred went into his house to have his dinner. It had been a very hot summer day and Farmer Fred was worn out. He decided that he was going to go to bed early that night.
While Farmer Fred was sleeping, a huge black rain cloud covered his precious vegetable garden. It poured rain and there was some deafening of sounds of thunder as well as the brightest strikes of lightning.
Surprising, Farmer Fred slept through the entire storm and even more surprising was the fact that he felt very rested when he woke up the next morning.
“That was the best sleep I have had in such a long time,” said Farmer Fred to himself as he poured a cup of coffee. “I feel so rested today.”
Farmer Fred took his cup of coffee out to his front porch so he could sit and relax before his busy day started.
“Are those voices I hear?” asked Farmer Fred to himself as he thought he heard people talking. “It can’t be voices though. I am the only one here. Maybe I left the radio on in the barn last night.”
“Mrs. Tomato is part of the Fresh Veggie family. She believes she was married in a previous life. She is very tender. She is afraid to say no. She plays the harp and tambourine and she also does some singing.,” said a voice. “How do you know you were married in a previous life?”
“Now Olive Onion is part of the Fresh Veggie family. She is married to Oliver Onion. She is open and honest. She likes to sing.,” said another voice. “You just leave Mrs. Tomato alone. What does it really matter if she was married? You are married.”
“Oh Christopher Corn is part of the Fresh Veggie family. I created him in honour of Chris Cornell. Christopher Corn has a very calm attitude. He can walk into a heated argument and the sound of his voice is calming. He experiments with different instruments and is the lead singer of the new rock band, "Loud Garden". Christopher's favourite instrument is the guitar.,” said Olive.” I just love the sound of your voice. It is so calming and you are right. It really doesn’t matter.”
“What is going on?” Farmer Fred said, when he realized that there was no way those voices were coming from a radio.
Farmer Fred stepped down off the porch and walked toward the direction of the voices.
“That is strange,” said Farmer Fred. “The voices are coming from the direction of my garden.”
Farmer Fred quickly walked down the stone pathway and opened the garden gate. He was in shock at what he saw. There, in the middle of his garden, were real live vegetables walking and talking just like they were humans.
“What is going on here?” asked Farmer Fred. “Who are you and what are you doing in my garden?”
“Allow me to introduce us,” said Christopher Corn, in his most calming voice ever. “My name is Christopher Corn, this to my left is Cameron Cauliflower is part of the Fresh Veggie family. He is very caring. If someone needs a shoulder to cry on he is there. Cameron loves to dance.. To my right is Calvin Carrot is part of the Fresh Veggie family. He has a carefree attitude and he likes to give people advice. He doesn't care what others think of him. He likes to play the drums. and on the ground are Olive and Oliver Onion is part of the Fresh Veggie family. He is married to Olive Onion. Oliver loves to write poetry and just like his wife, he is open and honest. and Mrs. Tomato. We are the Farmer Fred owns a 100 acre farm in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He decided that instead of raising cattle he was going to grow his own vegetables instead. He was looking forward watching his fresh veggies grow. One night Farmer Fred went to bed early and it poured rain. The next morning all his vegetables had arms, legs and were able to talk. The Fresh Veggie Family consists of Christopher Corn, Olive and Oliver Onion, Mrs. Tomato, Calvin Carrot and Cameron Cauliflower..”
“Okay,” said Farmer Fred, more confused than ever.” What are you doing in my garden and, what happened to all of my vegetables that I had growing.”
“I understand that you are concerned,” said Christopher. “We are your vegetables.”
“You are,” said Farmer Fred, noticing how calming Christopher’s voice was and how it was calming him down.
“Did you not see the storm last night I asked Mrs. Tomato tenderly.
“No,” said Farmer Fred. “I didn’t. I was exhausted last night so I went to bed early. I slept right through the night.”
“You missed a good storm,” said Olive open and honestly.
“I must have,” said Farmer Fred, still trying, to process what was going on.
“One moment we were all in the ground,” said Calvin Carrot, with his carefree attitude. “And the next thing we knew we all had arms and legs and are able to talk.”
“This is just so very strange,” said Farmer Fred. “I don’t know what to make of it.”
“It is very strange for us as well,” said Oliver, open and honestly.
“Yes,” said Farmer Fred, agreeing with Oliver. “I do suppose it would be. “It would be strange waking up with arms and legs and a vice as well. I am not quite sure what to make of all this. However, I do suppose that we need to make the most of the situation.”
“That is the best thing I have heard all day,” said Christopher.
The Fresh Veggie Family got along very well with Farmer Fred. They found he was very kind and compassionate. He told the Fresh Veggie Family that he was going to find a way to make their situation work.
“I guess we are just one big happy family,” said Farmer Fred.
“Yes,” agreed Christopher. “That we are.”
Farmer Fred and the Fresh Veggie Family did get to spend a lot of time together that summer. The Fresh Veggie Family grew on him. He grew to love and respect them and they grew to love and respect him as well. They all looked out for each other. Soon, Farmer Fred could never imagine a world without them. They were like the children to him that he never had.
