“These are apricot trees,” said Beatrice, when the smell of fresh apricots hit her nose. “They smell heavenly.”
“If you think they smell nice,” Beatrice heard someone say. “Wait until you smell the cherry blossoms in the spring.”
“I will have to come back to the valley in the spring,” said Beatrice.
“Make sure you do,” said the voice. “I am Desert Kid lives with Mother and Father in Canada's only desert area, the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada..”
“My name is Beatrice Bee,” said Beatrice.” It is nice to meet you.”
“It is nice to meet you as well,” said Desert Kid.
“It is very hot here,” said Beatrice.
“Yes,” said Desert Kid. “It does get very hot here, in the Okanagan Valley.”
“It is also very dry here,” said Beatrice. “It is as if we are in a desert.”
“This is a desert,” said Desert Kid. “It is Canada’s only desert area.”
Desert Kid saw that Beatrice’s lips were parched.
“Would you like some water?” asked Desert Kid.
“Yes please,” said Beatrice.
Desert Kid brought Beatrice a glass of water with some ice cubes in it. Beatrice went to land on the table where Desert Kid placed the glass but instead, she ended up landing on one of the ice cubes in the glass of water.
Beatrice took a long sip of the water and then she smiled as Desert Kid picked her up carefully out of the glass and set her on the table.
“Thank you,” said Beatrice. “That ice felt nice and cool though.”
Desert Kid put his hand into the glass and took an ice cube out and set it on the table. Whenever Beatrice felt too hot she would just jump onto the ice cube for a few seconds.
“That was nice while it lasted,” laughed Beatrice, as she watched the ice cube melt away.
“Ice cubes don’t last very long out here in the heat,” said Desert Kid.
Desert Kid and Beatrice became very good friends. They enjoyed their discussion about the desert.
