Lonely Scarecrow

Lonely Scarecrow Has a Heart

Autumn Stories Autumn Story Challenge 2017 Grade 5 Level Lonely Scarecrow Stories

“You know,” said Lonely Scarecrow to his best friend, Dallas. “I love being a scarecrow but, one thing I wish I had was a heart.”

“I don’t understand what you mean by that,” said Dallas. “I am pretty sure you already have one.”

“I don’t,” said Lonely Scarecrow, undoing the buttons on his shirt and pulling out handful after handful of straw. “See, there is no heart there.”

“I know you don’t have a physical heart,” said Dallas. “However, I do know you have the feelings and emotions that are associated with having a heart.”

“How do you know that?” asked Lonely Scarecrow.

“I just have to watch you with Hazel and the baby,” said Dallas. “You look at them with such love and devotion. You can’t feel love or devotion or any kind of emotion for that matter, if you don’t have a heart.”

Lonely Scarecrow thought about what Dallas had said and he knew Dallas was right.

“I guess I do have a heart,” said Lonely Scarecrow, happily. “I am glad I do.”
